From Patagonia to Antarctica: How a Maker Pushes Limits of Making

    Jun 4, 2026 09:33:01
Growing up in Patagonia, Argentina, Franco Mazzocca spent his childhood in his family’s repair workshop, surrounded by tools, machines, and the constant challenge of fixing things. Later, while studying electronics and manufacturing technologies in technical school, he developed a passion for solving problems with his own hands.

That mindset led him to 3D printing.

In 2015, inspired by the open-source RepRap movement but unable to afford a commercial printer, Franco built his first machine by salvaging stepper motors and smooth rods from old photocopiers, with a handful of purchased components, such as a hotend, a heatbed and an Arduino controller.

He named it “Bessie.” What started as a DIY project soon became a decade-long journey of learning, making, and sharing knowledge through his YouTube channel, Día de la Toalla.

Over the years, 3D printing opened unexpected doors. Franco used it to help people with prosthetics, create educational tools, restore antique components, and produce museum exhibits. But technology would eventually take him somewhere he had dreamed about since childhood: Antarctica.

A 3D Printer at the End of the World

Franco has always considered himself an explorer. To him, 3D printing is not simply a manufacturing tool—it is a way of approaching challenges.

“My brain has been rewired by this machine,” he says. “Whenever I face a problem, the first thing I think is whether I can solve it with 3D printing.”

That belief was tested during his trip to Antarctica.

After years of publishing 3D modeling and printing content online, Franco caught the attention of personnel working at Antarctic facilities. They asked: can you bring a printer to Antarctica? Franco’s answer was yes.

Armed with a Creality K1, he boarded an icebreaker for Marambio Base.

The trip quickly proved that Antarctica operates on its own schedule. Weather delays disrupted every plan. After finally arriving at the base in the early morning hours, Franco immediately began installing equipment. Just six hours later, however, he received unexpected news: everyone who had arrived on the same flight was being evacuated due to worsening weather conditions.
Franco was devastated. He had dreamed of visiting Antarctica for years and thought the experience would end almost as soon as it began.

Before a new departure could be arranged, a severe snowstorm arrived, forcing him to stay at the base for 9 days.

During those 9 days, he solved countless problems with 3D printing. The most critical moment: the base’s boiler broke. Outside, it was -13°C, and the indoor temperature was dropping. An internal metal shaft had snapped. Franco took out his 3D printer and the right materials, printed the shaft, fixed the boiler and made it run again.

For Franco, the incident demonstrated the true value of localized manufacturing: the ability to produce solutions exactly where and when they are needed.

    Why Creality Earned His Trust

Over the years, Franco has tested more than 50 different 3D printers, but Creality machines have become some of his most trusted tools. Specifically, an Ender 5 Plus and a CR-6 Max. For five years, they produced full‑scale dinosaur bone replicas for a museum in Trelew, melting through massive amounts of filament to create pieces for over a dozen life‑sized dinosaurs.

His first experience with the brand came through the Ender-3.

“I was surprised that a company could offer such a capable machine at that price,” he recalls. “It changed my perspective on what was possible for makers.”

Beyond affordability, Franco values reliability and repairability. In Argentina, obtaining specialized replacement parts can be difficult and expensive, making serviceability especially important.

That practicality is one reason Creality printers have accompanied him on some of his most unusual projects. From operating a K1 in Antarctica to running an Ender-3 V3 SE aboard an icebreaker, the machines have endured vibration, cold temperatures, and demanding field conditions.

    Manufacturing Without Borders

Today, Franco continues to push the limits of where manufacturing can happen. He hopes to return to Antarctica in the future to help establish a digital fabrication lab equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and recycling systems.

His goal is simple: prove that manufacturing should not be limited by geography.

From a small workshop in Patagonia to one of the harshest environments on Earth, Franco’s journey shows how accessible technology can transform ideas into real-world solutions.

Franco says: “3D printing is what has allowed me to live adventures. It is usually the first spark that lights everything that follows.” And Creality continues to provide fuel for that spark.
